Violist Youming Chen is an active recitalist, chamber, and orchestral musician. He performed on many international acclaimed stages, namely Carnegie, Alice Tully, Royal Albert, Avery Fisher, Luncern, Konzerthaus-Berlin, De Montfort, and National Taiwan Concert Hall. As winner of Rutgers Symphony Orchestra concerto competition, he performed the revised edition of Bartok’s viola concerto with Rossen Milanov. He was featured on WQXR in NY as “Young Artist Showcase” and televised BBC Proms with Sir Colin Davis as principal violist. Mr. Chen has participated in Pacific Music Festival (Japan), Aspen Music Festival, Prussia Cove (England), and Music@Menlo. He was a former violist of the Gustave Rosseels Quartet and a founding member of the Fader Piano Quartet who received Saunderson Award at Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition. Fader quartet was invited to play at the Rainbow Room at NBC studio and the American Irish Historical Society in New York.
Mr. Chen’s teachers include Paul Neubauer, Toby Appel, Hsin-Yun Huang,Yizhak Schotten, Victoria Chiang, Alan de Veritch, and Ben Lin. His chamber coaches include members of Brentano, Chester, Cleveland, Concord, Emerson, Guaneri, Juilliard, Mendelssohn, and Orion quartets. He received his MM from Juilliard School, BM from University of Michigan and is currently pursuing DMA at University of Missouri-Kansas City with Scott Lee.
Mr. Chen serves as a chamber music faculty for Heartland Music Academy’s Stringendo and Chamber Music Festival, both programs are designed to nurture young musicians through chamber music. He also teaches at Performing Arts Institute of Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania. He resides in Kansas City with his wife Alice, who is a cellist.
